SGT “First Saturday” Winter Walk in Branford Feb. 4

Hardy walkers join us at 10a.m. for the SGT “First Saturday”  Winter Walk taking place in Branford on February 4. The  SGT Team will lead a hike along a section of the trail the town and SGT have agreed to develop next.  Everyone is welcome to join us and share in the trail’s vision!

The walk will begin by traversing a developed section of the SGT trail parallel to Tilcon Road and continue onto Totoket Road.  We will cross over onto Blackstone Avenue and into Young’s Park.  Next we will loop around the park and return via the “Around Branford” Trail.   Terrain varies from smooth to rough road surfaces, so wear sturdy shoes.  If enough snow is on the ground, feel free to wear snowshoes or X-Country skis.

Note:  The trail is not yet suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Directions: Route 146, turn south on Totoket Road, bear left at ”V” (golf course on left and ahead on right). First left is Tilcon Road which ends at the western end of the Stony Creek.  Meet at the Tilcon parking lot by 10a.m.

Come one, come all – we look forward to sharing this walk with you!

If there is any question about weather cancellation, feel free to call J. Miller at 203 481-3870.

Rescheduled First Saturday Walk held November 5

Chet leads hikers on Branford's November First Saturday Walk

Branford’s rescheduled First Saturday Walk, held on November 5, was highly successful.  A group of 18 hikers set off on a beautiful day to walk the temporary Tabor Trail along Chet’s Pond and to climb Mount Branford.
Information about SGT’s goals and activities were provided by Chet Blomquist along with local history.

Tabor Trail ready for November’s First Saturday walk

Despite the weather prediction for a nor’easter, 9 stalwart Branford volunteers worked on Saturday, October 29 to prepare the Tabor section of the Shoreline Greenway Trail for the first Satruday hike scheduled for November 5.  The walk will begin at 10:00 a.m.  from the parking lot of Tabor Lutheran Church in Branford.  Thanks to those pictured below and to Chet Blomquist and Judy Miller who are not pictured, the trail is ready for hikers!

Volunteers cleared Branford Tabor trail – rescheduled First Saturday Walk to Nov. 5

Veteran trail blazer Chet Blomquist and five other senior members of  Branford’s SGT Team organized a “hurricane cleanup” on October 1, the morning that the Branford First Saturday Walk had to be cancelled. They cleared many fallen trees, branches and litter along Branford’s Tabor trail section, opening it up again.   Thank you, men, for your dedicated volunteer help:   Chet Blomquist, Tony Corso, Dave Stamp, Rich Radune, Leo Cristofar and Dennis Kelly for working to clean up the mess Irene left on the Tabor trail.  The work party did an excellent job and the trail is nearly ready for people traffic.  Yea!  Sorry Leo and Dennis for not getting you in the picture below!

Post-hurricane work crew for Tabor trail

Now Chet has rescheduled his 1st Saturday Walk along the Tabor trail section in Branford to November 5, the next First Saturday Walk date. Just  show up at 10 am at the Tabor Church parking lot on Tabor Drive off Montowese Street in Branford.

And if you prefer to bike, join the Guilford SGT Team on a bike ride from the Guilford harbor to Stony Creek.  Check under Walk & Bike for details.

Also, a special thanks to Paul Proulx, for mapping out and leading a wonderful bike ride around Pine Orchard on  Oct 1, a drizzly morning that deterred all but one couple who braved the weather and enjoyed the ride with Paul after the rain stopped.  We will do the ride again sometime in the future under better weather conditions!
